The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
