2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
The news follows a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the time to come.
The President

Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or platforms, but fans can expect additional details as production progresses.
