Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
