New research reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
