The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
