A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
